The Bus Centre – All-things Bus

Welcome to The Bus Centre, your one-stop bus shop. As a stand-alone bus store, we focus solely on buses, including parts and service. If you are looking to purchase a bus, or need support for an existing unit, you’ve come to the right place.

Bus Sourcing

We source used buses from our customers and dealer network, Canada wide. Good used units often come in on trades or business closures. You’ll find our current inventory here. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, give us a call and we’ll do the searching for you. We are always working to find quality used buses for our customers.

The USA generally has a better availability of good used buses. Sourcing internationally has its own challenges, including unit condition of unseen units, lack of warranty, cross border transacting, significant exchange rate differences and the need to upgrade the bus to become D250 Canada safety compliant. In general, these units require significant additional costs to be made road-worthy and are generally not cost effect to import. A customer would be wiser to consider the purchase of a new bus with full warranty over a cross-border purchase.

We’ll be up front about the used bus market. As much as we’d like to sell you a good used school bus, there isn’t much availability at this time. Just like all other commodities in our daily lives, new buses have also gone up in price. That increase makes a less expensive used bus highly desirable.

Customers also tend to run their units the maximum allowed by their school divisions. After 15+ years of service, these buses have lived a good long life and are generally retired from service. Units in this age range are often used in personal customization projects.

It’s a fact that a used buses is a cost-effective way to continue to service your route. We do receive used buses on trade, however as a highly sought item, they sell quickly. Still, consider checking our inventory as we do occasionally have some listed on our website.

Shuttle buses have more variability and we do see units that are newer or with lower mileage. Contact us to keep your needs in mind as we hear of quality used shuttles that become available.

If you are interested in a used vehicle, it’s best to give us a call to find out what may be coming in, or have your name added to the list with the specifications you’re looking for. Sometimes we may be able to connect you with a seller.

In general, used buses do not qualify for financing however we do offer great financing options for new buses. See our options here or speak with one of our sales managers for more information.

Getting A Used Bus On The Road

Repairs and Modifications

Our experienced technicians are trained to diagnose and repair vehicle deficiencies. We take pride in offering excellence as we assist customers with their service needs. We also have the largest parts warehouse in Western Canada, which complements our service capabilities to get repairs done quickly.  See our parts and service pages for more details.

School Buses and D250 compliance

If you are planning to use the bus for a personal project, modifications will be required to remove school related signage (stop sign, school bus lettering, alternating lights). This bus will no longer be fit for school bus usage and will no longer require certification. Customers often have interesting and useful purposes for old buses but as a result, are looking for very low-cost options. Units like this can be sourced more easily at auctions.

School bus routes required properly certified school buses. That includes a semi-annual commercial vehicle (CVIP) assessment to be completed. These buses must meet D250 compliance.

The CSA D250-16 is a Canadian Standards Association standard that specifies the chassis and body requirements and safety equipment requirements for school buses. D250 compliance includes specific requisites in the follow areas:

  • lamps
  • reflectors and signals
  • crossing and stop arms
  • mirrors
  • strobe lamps
  • roof hatches
  • school bus colour

All school bus units must adhere to these national standards. Provincial standards may have additional requirements. Units that are moving from one province to another are required to upgrade to the standards of the new province before being considered road-worthy.
